A teen-age boy and girl are smiling after surgery for wisdom teeth by Gilbert dentist, Dr. Wilson

We all have them. Wisdom teeth or “third molars” usually appear in our mid-teens. In face, wisdom tooth removal by our Gilbert oral surgeon is one of the commonest extractions we perform here at The Maxillofacial Surgery Center.

Why do wisdom teeth sometimes need to be removed? And how will you know if yours or your child’s wisdom teeth need attention?

Why We Remove Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars most people get when they are in their late teens or early twenties. In most cases, the mouth has insufficient space for wisdom teeth to erupt, which may cause them to become impacted or infected.

An impacted wisdom tooth is not in the best position for proper chewing and cleaning. Given this improper positioning, the impacted sites may be at a greater risk for bacteria to grow and lead to infection.

Also, a wisdom tooth that is impacted or erupts sideways may cause damage or crowding to surrounding teeth and roots. Dr. Wilson has the advanced education and training to perform even the most difficult extractions in the comfort of our convenient office.
